Mail List Builder
List Types
Our mail list building tool offers four mail list types, described below. A single product on a brand portal site can be used for only one mail list type, but the brand portal can have several similar products to accommodate different mail list types. The product is typically named for the mail list type it is associated with or it is detailed in the product description.
EDDM – Every Door Direct Mail
- Allows reach within a targeted carrier route without knowing specific addresses.
- Mailed items do not have an address on them: the piece is literally dropped in every box on a route.
Saturation
- A collection of potential customer names and addresses within a specific geographic area.
- Cannot select demographics: the mailing goes to every address within the chosen area.
Consumer
- A collection of potential residential customer names and addresses within a specific geographic area with specified consumer demographics.
Business
- A collection of potential business customer names and addresses within a specific geographic area with specified business demographics.
ACCESSING MAIL LIST BUILDER
- Take note any listed minimum or maximum limits on the mailing product - these will be enforced within the mail list builder when saving the list you build, and will help determine when you have adequately narrowed your mailing area.
- Ignore the QTY field: this will auto-populate when the final mail list is created and added to cart.
- For customized products: Select the Customize button for customized products. The template will open in media builder for editing. Make edits and select the Create Mail List button.
- For static products: select the Create Mail List button for static products. This will take you directly into the mail list builder tool.
CREATING A NEW MAIL AREA
When first entering the mail list builder you are presented with a map.
- Under Step 1 select Create a New Mail Area.
- Under Step 2 in the Search Mail Area field, enter some part of the address (street address, or city name, or state, or zip code) where you want to create your mail list. Select the Return/Enter key. The map will zoom in on that location and name of the location will appear beneath the search field.
- In the Mail Area Name field, enter a unique name for the list. It is recommended to name this in a manner useful for reuse, in case you want to access the same list again for a future mailing.
- If desired, you can distinguish this mail area overlay on the map by selecting the Select Color button.
- The Coverage Area dropdown allows choices in how to view the area on the map. The most used options are described below. NOTE: When sent through in the end, all view options define carrier routes and result in the same final list.
- Carrier Routes – when selected, an overlay will outline the carrier routes on the map.
- Click on the map to select routes to include in the mail list. As the carrier routes are selected, they will be highlighted with the color set in step 4.
- As the carrier routes are selected, the count of the addresses in the selections will display at the bottom of the Step 2 panel on the screen’s left side, as shown here:
- Click on the map to select routes to include in the mail list. As the carrier routes are selected, they will be highlighted with the color set in step 4.
- Radius – used to specify a specific distance from the center point of the mail area. This will select all carrier routes where any part of the route is inside the radius.
- Define the center of the radius by adding an address and select Find. Alternately, click on the map to drop a pin and define the center point.
- On the map, a waypoint marker appears in that location.
- Set a milage distance from the center.
- A circle will appear, displaying the coverage area.
- Select the Save Area button: the carrier routes selected and the address counts will be displayed.
- To change the address count: increase/decrease the mileage number, then select the Display button, and click the Save Area button again to refresh.
- You also can change the selection by selecting the Convert to Carrier Route button. Once you do the map will show an overlay of the carrier routes. Once this is done you can no longer edit the selection by distance, you now must edit by selecting/deselecting carrier routes as explained above in the Carrier Routes section.
- Define the center of the radius by adding an address and select Find. Alternately, click on the map to drop a pin and define the center point.
- Drive Time – Similar in function to Radius, except it defines the drive time (in minutes) from the center point.
- Polygon – allows you to select an area by drawing it on the map.
- States, Counties, Zip Codes – Similar in function to Carrier Routes, except it includes the full coverage area type selected.
- Carrier Routes – when selected, an overlay will outline the carrier routes on the map.
SAVING THE MAIL AREA AND SUBMITTING THE MAIL LIST ORDER
Saving the Mail Area
Mail areas can be saved as you are editing. Once a Mail Area is saved it will be available for use in your account any time you return to the mail list builder tool. NOTE: Each time you save a named mail area it is overwritten with recent changes – you must rename it to preserve an old list.
- To save a mail area, select the Save Territory button.
Preparing the Mail List for Order
Mail lists are created with the addresses located in the selected, saved mail area.
- To create the mail list and purchase it, select Process List. A message will appear once the list is ready. Selecting Process also saves the mail list for future use.
- The Alert dialog can be dismissed by pressing the OK button.
- You can continue to edit the mail list area on the map, or move forward to ordering.
- After every change to the mail area you must select Process List prior to adding to the cart.
- Once you are happy with the mail list territory, you can place the order for the product and the mail list by selecting Add to Cart.
- You will be taken to the cart view, where you will find the product. The quantity in the cart will contain the count for the addresses of the mail list. DO NOT change this count - your order cannot be processed if the count does not match the ordered list.
Use a Previously Saved Mail Area
- Under Step 1 select Use Existing Mail Area.
- In the Step 2 panel, a list of your account’s saved areas will appear. Make a selection from the list.
- Once selected, the carrier routes and counts are shown at bottom left on the Step 2 panel. Additionally, the map will zoom in on the location and highlight the mail area.
- If no changes are needed to the mail area: follow the steps as described in the above section “Saving the mail area and submitting the mail list order.” If ordering a Consumer or Business mail list and changes are needed to demographics, see section below “Defining demographics.”
- If Mail area changes are needed: Once the mail area name is selected, several tools appear that allow you to edit the mail area, described below.

- Currently not functional. Future update will allow list sharing between accounts.
- As changes are made to the mail area the counts displayed in the Selected Carrier Routes display will update.
- Once changes are complete, follow the steps as described in the above section “Saving the mail area and submitting the mail list order.” If ordering a Consumer or Business mail list and changes are needed to demographics see section below on “Defining demographics.”
DEFINING DEMOGRAPHICS
Consumer and Business mail lists can be filtered by demographics. This section pertains ONLY to those types of mail lists; EDDM and Saturation lists cannot have demographics applied.
- Prior to processing the mail list, select Choose Demographics. The Step 3: Select Demographics panel will appear.
- In this panel define the demographics you desire. As demographics are selected, a summary will appear at the panel’s bottom. If editing an existing mail area with demographics selected, those will be displayed in the summary.
- At any time, you can choose Save Selects to preserve the mail area. You then can continue to edit and resave as additional changes are made.
- To see the count of addresses of the mail area with the demographics defined, select Get Count. With any change to the demographics, to update the count reselect Get Count.
- If mail area adjustments are needed:
- When creating a new mail area, make edits as described above in “Creating a new mail area.”
